Captaincy
career of Azhar Ali stared with three successive defeats to Bangladesh but his
batting was not to be blamed. Pakistan needed a win in each of the ODIs against
Zimbabwe to raise their ICC ranking where Azhar scored 79 in the first ODI and
a hundred in the second. Raza’s unbeaten 100 and Chibhabha’s 99 helped Zimbabwe
to reach a total of 269 which was looking underwhelming one on a flat pitch but
Pakistan’s chasing record was providing prospect. However Azhar started the
chase patiently where all other batsmen supported him reaching double figures.
Azhar and Sarfraz opened the innings where captain continued to play in the
gaps and Sarfraz lost his wicket in a try to sweep the balls. Azhar continued
to score at almost every ball despite fall of Hafeez at 68. Chibhabha gave him
a chance by dropping at short cover in the 23rd over when he was at
53. Zimbabwe had to wait for 10 overs for the next wicket when they got Asad
Shafiq out for Pakistan needed just 116 off 18.2 overs.
Haris
Sohail settled all the problems if Pakistan was facing. The wicket of Azhar
fell in the meanwhile when Pakistan needed 60 off 59 balls. Shoaib Malik joined
Sohail to finish the game. The bowling department has perhaps left Pakistan unsatisfied
because it was straight fourth time that Zimbabwe scored at least 56 for the
opening wicket. Those were spinners who did the job where Yasir Shah got two
with Shoaib Malik getting one and the three spinners including Hafeez gave only
86 runs in 19 overs taking four wickets.
